Downtown Davis going Wireless!
You may have already heard through local press, TV or radio that downtown Davis is going wireless!
The purpose of the Downtown Davis Wireless Project is to develop a downtown wireless network, bring focus on downtown businesses, and to provide free Internet access on one unified network throughout downtown.
The partners in this endeavor are the Sparq Group, Aria Communications, and DDBA. We hope to provide Internet access in all areas of downtown, allowing laptop users to log on anywhere in the downtown area.
The group is currently working on a site map that will determine any areas that are not covered by Aria's existing wireless network. We are contacting business and property owners to determine their willingness to host routers for the wireless connection (provided free by Aria Communications).
The cost to host a router is approximately $2-3 per month on a business' electric bill. Participating businesses that host a router will be listed on the splash page (the Web page that comes up when an Internet user logs on to the network) with a Web link to their business.
DDBA will be in charge of the splash page, and will use it to promote events and businesses downtown.
